John Mark Sorum

I grew up in Seattle and later moved to Los Angeles, where I studied at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena for two years before continuing my education at the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York.

My passion for photography began at an early age. I was inspired by the gallery walls in my mother’s home, which featured portraits taken by Roland Reed, a relative who, along with his cousin Edward S. Curtis, created powerful and historically significant images of Native Americans. Their images left a lasting impression on me and ultimately inspired me to pursue photography as a career.

For many years, I worked as a freelance photographer before founding Color Card Studios in 2014, located in Industry City, Brooklyn. The studio was designed as a private production space serving eCommerce clients, built around a “one client at a time” philosophy—an intentional departure from the high-volume, photo-factory environment common at the time.

As studio owner, I took on multiple roles, including producer, lead photographer, on-set art director, and post-production manager. Color Card now operates from two locations in New York City and Brooklyn.

Today, I am back to my first love of shooting portraits, traveling and working on a follow up to my first book, Identical. The project is a then and now portrait study of Identical twins 20 years apart. Due for completion next year.
